Architectural careers are not exclusively American or Indian.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of American and American Indian architects increased between 1990 and 2000 and fell in 2011.
Indian-born architect and urban designer Rahul Dhillon said the difference in the composition of their professions was due to a cultural and economic divide.
He said Indian architects tended to work in more “traditional” buildings, while American-born architects tended towards more contemporary architecture.
“American and Indian architectural graduates are quite similar in terms of their professional outlook, in terms that they want to get a job in a particular field.
Indian architects tend to be more pragmatic and are more open to change,” he said.
In the last decade, the American-American Association of Architects and the American Institute of Architects have formed a taskforce on architectural diversity, and the government of India has started providing financial incentives to foreign-born graduates to become architects.
The Indian government also offers incentives to Indian architects who want to move to the US, including financial aid, job relocation support and scholarships.
“Indian architecture graduates are not the only ones who have problems in the US.
We are the biggest market in the world, and there is a lot of talent there, too,” Dhillons said.
He added that there is no universal answer for all people with a similar education.
“It’s a lot about being a good match.
What we need is to make sure that we are matching our education with the skill set of our applicants,” he added.
A recent report by the National Institute of Standards and Technology said American-Indian architects had the highest graduation rates of any profession in the country.
Dhillones’ team of more than 50 architects has designed several residential buildings for Indian families in New York and Los Angeles.
The work has also been shown to benefit children in the homes.
He believes the quality of the work is also important.
“I think that what we can do to create a better environment for the next generation is to help their parents and grandparents to move,” he explained.
Drellons, who is the director of the Indian American Advisory Council, said it was important to remember that the design of residential buildings is influenced by people’s cultural and religious beliefs.
“There is a long history of design and architecture in India and it has a long tradition.
The people of India have a strong appreciation of the art of architecture and design,” he noted.
He also believes there are positive factors in being an Indian architect.
“The diversity of our profession is a positive thing, as are our people, who have a love of architecture,” he argued.
“We don’t have the same cultural norms, but they are also open-minded and tolerant.
The more diverse you are, the more open-hearted and tolerant you are.”
