Posted November 13, 2018 09:31:23A pair of Australian architects has been awarded the coveted World Architecture Prize for their innovative designs that make the most of existing space.
The prize is given every three years to a “master architect” and is the world’s most prestigious award.
Erick The Architect, who has designed the US Embassy in London, is one of just three finalists to be named.
The winning design is the new International Center of Excellence in Science and Technology, which has been developed in collaboration with the US National Science Foundation.
“It is the culmination of years of planning and collaboration, a design that combines the highest levels of engineering, design and science to create an interdisciplinary building that will redefine the way the world views space,” said David J. Gifford, the winner of the 2017 World Architecture prize.
The International Center is located in the city of Washington, DC, which is the second largest city in the country and the fourth largest in the world.
“Erick’s unique design combines elements of architecture, science and technology to create a new type of interdisciplinary space that will change the way we see and interact with space and the people who use it,” said John Giffords, the other winner of 2017.
Erich the Architect, Erick The Architects, Ma Architects, and Ma Design are a trio of architects based in the Melbourne suburb of West Footscray.
Eric is the third Australian to win the prize, following Paul A. Johnston, who was awarded the World Architecture award in 2003, and Paul F. Dyer, who won the Australian Architectural Award in 1998.
Erick and Erick also won the World Architectural Prize in 2007 and 2012.
The winner of last year’s World Architecture Award, a prize for a single building, is awarded by the architecture critic and architecture society, and the winners of the 2015 and 2017 prizes are named on the basis of merit.
“We are so honoured to be in this position, the World Architects Prize is one part of a long tradition of recognising the most innovative, forward-thinking and innovative buildings in the history of the world,” said Erick the Architect.
“As well as our work in the new building, we have a lot of ambitious plans for our future.
These include an extension of our Melbourne campus to connect with the world-class science centre in Washington, D.C., which will create a great destination for international students and research facilities.”
We hope that the World architecture prize will help to elevate the careers of some of Australia’s most creative and creative minds,” he said.
